Anesthesiology Department Gains Internationally Recognized Physician-Scientist as Visionary Leader

Randal O. Dull, MD, PhD, has been named the chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

Randal O. Dull, MD, PhD, has been appointed professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

Dr. Dull’s leadership role officially commenced on July 2. The physician-scientist is eager to create a sustainable, highly efficient, team-centered anesthesiology program by building trust among the executives, directors and chairs with whom he will collaborate.

“Integrity is my most valuable trait. I want to engender trust in my department chiefs, in my co-workers and in my colleagues from other departments,” he explained. “If I generate trust, I will generate loyalty and teamwork.”

Irving L. Kron, MD, senior associate vice president for the UA Health Sciences and interim executive dean of the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, said Dr. Dull will be an asset to the college.

“I am impressed by Dr. Dull’s vision for the UA Department of Anesthesiology and look forward to working with him,” Dr. Kron said. “His leadership style, thoughtfulness and expertise in anesthesiology practice and administration will only mean great things for the department and the College of Medicine – Tucson overall.”

The new department chair hopes to create an environment where anesthesiology faculty and staff members believe they are performing meaningful work.

He explained, “We can find a way for each faculty member to fit into a role that makes him or her happy, and at the same time, makes the UA College of Medicine – Tucson successful at helping provide great patient care.”

Dr. Dull’s other priorities include developing department-wide standardized approaches to personalized medicine and improving specialty and sub-specialty teams, acute patient services, trauma care and geriatric anesthesia care.

“Every process needs continuous refinement, and re-assessment always is required,” Dr. Dull said. “Any major change should be designed to improve patient care, efficiency and education. If we can’t do those three things simultaneously, we should be very careful about making changes.”

Dr. Dull’s many years in the medical field have taught him the importance of building good teams and providing excellent patient care.

The internationally known physician-scientist has 18 years of clinical anesthesia experience, specifically thoracic, vascular and trauma. He also has more than 20 years of research experience in vascular and pulmonary physiology.

Prior to his arrival in Tucson, Dr. Dull served as a tenured professor and vice chair for seven years at the University of Illinois - Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology. He also spent eight years at the University of Utah School of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology. There, he was awarded the Presidential Endowed Chair in Anesthesiology, a $1.5 million presidential-level chairmanship.

Dr. Dull grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where he completed bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in physiology at Penn State University. His post-doctoral research training took him to the University of Chicago’s Department of Pathology. Chicago also is where Dr. Dull attended medical school at UIC. He then moved east to complete his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Dull is a husband, father and mentor. In his spare time, he enjoys fly fishing.
