Home Centered Care Institute along with MedStar Health and seven other academic medicine institutions launched an initiative Tuesday to train home-care providers. They estimate about 1,000 providers currently offer home-based primary care, and their goal is to increase that number to 5,000 within five years. The University of Arizona Center on Aging is one of eight academic institutions involved in the effort.

Researchers led by Dr. Fayez K. Ghishan, director of the Steele Children’s Research Center and professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics, UA College of Medicine – Tucson, and Steele Center researcher Hua Xu, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, will seek to better understand how a protein known as NHE8 may play a role in the development of these maladies and how it contributes to maintaining the stability of the gut microbiome – the community of bacteria that inhabits the intestines and influences the immune system.

Now available in Spanish, Kidenga is the free smartphone app that allows users to report symptoms of illness and mosquito activity. The app was created by researchers at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to detect outbreaks of Zika, dengue and chikungunya.
