The University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics’ fifth annual Faculty/Resident Basketball Challenge, “Shoot for Smiles,” is scheduled Wednesday, April 9, 6 p.m., at McKale Center.
This friendly competition between faculty and resident pediatric physicians takes place every year and raises proceeds to benefit kids. There will be a free-throw competition at halftime, prizes, raffle items, silent auction, and more! The event is fun for the entire family.
Cost of admission to the game is a new toy (no stuffed animals) that will be donated to “Andrea’s Closet,” housed at both University Medical Center and Tucson Medical Center pediatric playrooms.
Andrea''s Closet is named for Andrea Brunk, a young girl from Phoenix who was diagnosed in July 2000 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 8. After chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the hospital child-life specialists would give Andrea a toy. The toys helped Andrea cope with the treatments and maintain a positive attitude. After 18 months of treatment, Andrea died in January 2002. In her memory, Andrea’s parents established “Andrea’s Closets”— special closets filled with new toys to give to hospitalized children.
