TUCSON, Ariz. The University of Arizona Steele Children’s Research Center has been chosen to receive a $50,000 Hyundai Scholar Grant from Hyundai Motor America’s “Hyundai Hope on Wheels®” program.
The grant will be presented during a Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony in front of Diamond Children’s at University Medical Center on May 24 at 10 a.m. Children affected by cancer will place their handprints in colorful paint and then on a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe – the official vehicle of the Hope on Wheels tour – to commemorate their brave battles with cancer.
Jim Click Automotive Group and Hyundai Hope on Wheels will present the Hyundai Scholar Grant to pediatric oncologist Puja Gupta, MD, assistant professor,UA Department of Pediatrics, and Steele Center researcher.
Dr. Gupta’s research focuses on the role nutrition plays in pediatric oncology. She hypothesizes that poor nutritional status correlates with delays in chemotherapy and increases the incidence of hospitalization for fever and neutropenia. She has designed a clinical research study to examine the relationship between a patient’s nutrition and its impact on the patient’s response to cancer treatment.
“I am excited about the prospect of studying the effects of nutrition in pediatric oncology. I would like to thank Hyundai for making it possible to work on this important project and am grateful for their support of pediatric oncology research,” says Dr. Gupta.
