The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson has organized a 5K Race, to benefit UA medical student Derek Neal and his family, which will be held Sunday, Dec. 2, 9-11 a.m., at the UA Mall starting at Old Main.
On Saturday, Sept. 1, Neal, 41, a second-year medical student at the college, was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and was told that his illness would be terminal. A husband and a father of two young children, he and his family are facing this devastating illness day-by-day with support from family, friends and colleagues.
Neal also is a graduate of the UA College of Nursing and a former pediatric intensive care nurse at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus.
The Team Derek 5K course will start at Old Main on the west end of the UA Mall and loop to the east end of the mall (University and Campbell Ave.) and back two times, totaling 3.2 miles.
Participants should arrive 30 to 40 minutes early to pick up a T-shirt and race number. All proceeds from this event will benefit Derek Neal. Register online at https://teamderek5k.webconnex.com/home
