ROAR is a program that allows pediatricians to "prescribe" reading to children and volunteers to stress to parents the importance of early literacy.

DATES/TIMES: Monday, March 5 - Friday, March 9, 10 a.m. - noon daily

PLACE: 3rd Floor Pediatric Outpatient Clinic Waiting Room at UMC
1501 N. Campbell Ave.

CONTACT: Keri Valdés, (520) 626-7051

Community leaders will read to toddlers waiting for their appointments at UMC and help introduce and celebrate the beginning of the Reach Out and Read program -- otherwise known as "ROAR."
ROAR is run by pediatricians at the UA Department of Pediatrics and

Steele Memorial Children's Research Center and housed in the UMC Pediatric Outpatient Clinic. Its message is delivered in three parts.

First, when parents bring their children to the clinic waiting room, volunteers read to the children and demonstrate reading-aloud techniques to the parents. Second, during the medical visit, a pediatrician or nurse practitioner will tell parents the importance of reading and emphasize the long-term benefits for their children. At the end of the visit, every child between 6 months and 5 years old is given a new book to take home. The readers are scheduled as follows:
