Arizona Governor Jane Hull will be at the University of Arizona Tuesday, November 19 to tour laboratory facilities devoted to genomics research efforts. The genome is the complete genetic makeup of an organism. Genomics technologies allow researchers to investigate the genes and gene systems that are blueprints for all life activities.

Dr. Michael Hammer's work involves the genetic and evolutionary factors that influence populations, with special focus on the origins and migration patterns of human populations. Dr. Walt Klimecki's research at the Arizona Respiratory Center targets causes and treatments for asthma and uses genomics technologies to study inheritable disease resistance and disease susceptibility.

Tour agenda:

1:00 - 1:10 p.m. Meet with Thomas O. Baldwin, PhD, Director, Institute for Biomedical Science and Biotechnology, Biological Sciences West, Room 362A for overview of genomics research capabilities at UA.

1:15 - 1:30 p.m. Tour of the Genomics Analysis Technology Core Laboratory with Michael Hammer, PhD, Nirav Merchant, Director, Biotechnology Computing, Michael Cusanovich, PhD, Director, Arizona Research Laboratories. Location: Life Sciences South, Room 203.

1:40 - 2:00 p.m. Tour of the Comparative Genomics Laboratory with Walt Klimecki, DVM, PhD, Raymond Woosley, MD, PhD, Vice President, Arizona Health Sciences Center, Donata Vercelli, MD, Assistant Director, Arizona Respiratory Center. Location: Arizona Health Sciences Center, Building 'C', Room 115.
