Dr. Harvey Meislin Appointed Head of UA Department of Emergency Medicine
Harvey W. Meislin, MD, FACEP, an internationally noted expert in emergency medicine and a longtime faculty member at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, has been selected to head the UA Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Meislin was selected following a national search for the position.
Founder and director of the UA's Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center and a professor of emergency medicine, Dr. Meislin played a pivotal role in creating the Department of Emergency Medicine at the College of Medicine in 2001, serving as Interim Head since that time.
Dr. Meislin came to the College of Medicine from UCLA in 1980 to found the Section of Emergency Medicine in the UA Department of Surgery. In 1990, he helped found the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center, a Center of Excellence at the UA College of Medicine.
Among many other honors, Dr. Meislin served as President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (1991-92); he is president-elect of the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2002; he is a Fellow, American College of Emergency Physicians and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor for the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Meislin has served on editorial/review boards for numerous publications, including the Annals of Emergency Medicine, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, and the Journal of the American Medical Association, among others.
Dr. Meislin earned his medical degree at Indiana University, followed by an internship at Harvard University. He served his residency at the University of Chicago, 1973-75.
