UA Program in Integrative Medicine Celebrates Graduation of 42 Associate Fellows

Forty-two associate fellows from The University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine will gather on Friday, Nov. 18.

TUCSON, Ariz.., -- Forty-two associate fellows from The University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine will gather on Friday, Nov. 18, 3 p.m., at the Westward Look Resort, 245 E. Ina Road, to receive their diplomas and their traditional wooden walking sticks in a ceremony marking their graduation from this two-year fellowship.

Andrew Weil, MD, program founder and director, will help the graduates look to the future with a talk titled, Moving Forward. Education director Howard Silverman, MD, will give the invocation. Other faculty members who will participate in the event include executive director Victoria Maizes, MD, and Tieraona Low Dog, MD. Graduating fellow Robert Pendergrast, MD, was chosen by the class to speak as its representative in the ceremony. Local fellows include Connie Doner, FNP, a nurse practitioner with the Sarver Heart Center; James Kerwin, MD, Patricia Lebensohn, MD, and Myra Muramoto, MD, MPH, members of the faculty of the UA Department of Family and Community Medicine. Tucson also is represented in the class by Diane C. Downing, MD, Lora Grimes, MD, and Chanel Helgason, MD.

The Associate Fellowship is a unique two-year program dedicated to teaching physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners the art and science of integrative medicine. Integrative Medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative.

The mission of the UA Program in Integrative Medicine is to lead the transformation of health care by creating, educating and actively supporting a community of professionals who embody the philosophy and practice of integrative medicine.
