TUCSON, AZ -- The University of Arizona Health Network has been named a winner of the Workplace Leaders in Financial Education Award, given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Society for Human Resource Management.

The award, created this year, recognizes corporate, non-profit and government organizations that exhibit excellence in workplace financial education through programs that teach employees to make good personal financial decisions. The University of Arizona Health Network is one of nine winning organizations across the nation.

“We believe financial education is an important resource for our employees’ well-being, and we are proud to be recognized for setting a national standard in this area,” said John Marques, vice president and chief human resources officer for The University of Arizona Health Network.

The University of Arizona Health Network’s Financial Wellness Program, offered through the organization’s human resources department, reaches out to employees through presentations, workshops and one-on-one financial advising with a certified financial planner. The free comprehensive program, which has been in place at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus since 2008, will roll out to the entire network in January.

“The idea is to empower employees and staff members to make good financial decisions, so guidance and education is really the focus,” said Mark Cline, personal finance and retirement planning counselor for The University of Arizona Health Network. Cline is a certified financial planner with FiduciaryVest, an independent investment advisory firm.

Since the Financial Wellness Program’s inception, Cline has had approximately 1,700 one-on-one interactions with hospital employees and reached more than 3,400 through workshops, seminars, presentations and open office hours. The program is unique in that it’s all-encompassing, Cline said. He offers financial advising on a wide range of topics, including retirement planning, credit debt, budgeting, refinancing, planning for a child’s education and more. Cline maintains an office at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus but keeps flexible hours and travels throughout the health network to reach employees in need of assistance at various locations.

A 2010 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management suggested that 30 percent of organizations offer one-on-one financial and investment advice, while 24 percent offer advice via in-group or classroom and 22 percent deliver advice online.
