The pharmacy, a partnership between Walgreens and The University of Arizona Cancer Center, celebrates its grand opening today at 3838 N. Campbell Ave. The 800-square-foot pharmacy will carry specialty cancer medications typically not carried in most retail pharmacies, as well as common medications.

The new Walgreens will help The University of Arizona Cancer Center – one of just 40 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation – meet its goal of providing comprehensive cancer care for its patients.

“Being an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, we’re always on the lookout for the latest and greatest and evaluating new ways to enhance patient care,” said Patti Stumbo, RN, the center’s director of oncology services.

The pharmacy also will help the center prepare for the future of cancer care.

“Although chemotherapy remains the most common cancer treatment, a number of new oral agents to treat cancer are expected to go on the market in the next three to five years,” said Rafael Diaz, associate vice president for pharmacy and supply chain at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus. “The new drugs in the pipeline are going to be oral, so that changes our business from an infusion business to an oral business.”

Any patient or employee of The University of Arizona Health Network can use the pharmacy, which will be open from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Pharmacists will offer counseling and education to help ensure patients are taking their medications regularly as prescribed, and a 24-hour call service will be available for patients who have questions about their medications outside regular hours. Mail order and home delivery prescription services also will be available.

The new pharmacy is one of 10 Walgreens collaborations with academic health centers throughout the nation, including The Ohio State University, Stanford Cancer Center and The University of California – San Francisco Medical Center.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in Arizona. With primary locations at the University of Arizona in Tucson, the Cancer Center has more than a dozen research and education offices in Phoenix and throughout the state where its 300 physician and scientist members work together to prevent and cure cancer.
